Vale Chris Hayward
Dear Auckland Water Polo Whanau,
It is with great sadness that Auckland Water Polo acknowledges the passing of our Life Member and former Chair, Chris Hayward.
Chris made an extraordinary contribution to Auckland Water Polo over many years. Through his leadership, vision and dedication, he played a significant role in the growth and development of our organisation and the sport of water polo in Auckland.
Among his many contributions, Chris was instrumental in establishing the Pan Pacific Youth Water Polo Festival, which for many years was the premier youth water polo tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, welcoming teams from across New Zealand and overseas.
Chris was also known for his practical, hands-on support of the sport, often quietly ensuring that essential equipment and facilities were in place for competitions to run smoothly. His knowledge of the game, its history, and what went before will be greatly missed.
Chris’s service to Auckland Water Polo was recognised through the awarding of Life Membership, reflecting the lasting impact he had on our organisation and our community.
On behalf of the Auckland Water Polo Board, our member clubs, staff and wider community, we extend our sincere condolences to Chris’s family, friends and all who knew him. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
Chris’s contribution to Auckland Water Polo will be remembered with gratitude and respect, and his legacy will continue to be reflected in the strength of our community and the opportunities available to future generations of players.
Ngā mihi,
Auckland Water Polo
